A Leaked photo shows us a glimpse of the Nothing Phone
The tech world has been paying a lot of attention to Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus and owner of the company Nothing. He launched the Nothing Ear (1) earbuds last year to some positive reviews. Not only that, but he announced that the company is launching four new devices in the near future. One device is the Nothing smartphone that’s rumored to come soon. A new image from the MWC event might have given us a slight glimpse of the Nothing phone. The photo looks like it was snapped from a video of the Mobile World Congress. This photo comes from Evan Blass on Twitter with the text “Nothing to see here”. In the picture, on the far right, we see Carl Pei and Cristiano R. Amon. Carl is showing off what looks like a rather large smartphone. We see the back of the phone with the rear camera package visible up top. Also, there are some stickers on the phone, which makes it look like a preproduction unit.
This might, “essentially”, be the successor to another phone
Since this is most likely not a final product, you should take this with a grain of salt. Looking at the picture, the phone doesn’t seem to have any camera bump at all. The camera package looks like it’s flush with the back of the phone. Not only that, but it has a rather boxy look to it. If it looks a little familiar, then it might resemble the Essential Ph-1; remember THAT phone? If the Nothing phone shares some DNA with 2017’s Essential PH-1, then that shouldn’t be a surprise. Pei purchased the sinking company Essential and transformed it into Nothing. It’s possible that Nothing utilized some of the Ph-1’s blueprints and built upon them. While most people would want to avoid any association with the Ph-1, the tech community would also like for that phone’s concept to have a second chance at succeeding. The Essential Ph-1 was let down by a poor camera package, an unexciting take on software, unfulfilled promises of accessories, and more. This all muddied what was quite possibly one of the most interesting phones of 2017. With this quick glimpse of the Nothing Phone, most people are just a little more excited.
