This Samsung stretchable display can stretch vertically to convert 2D videos into 3D content
One of the strengths of this new stretchable OLED display is the ability to convert standard 2D content into 3D. Samsung has been working on stretchable displays for quite some time now. The company revealed its first stretchable display prototype with similar functionality in 2017. However, Samsung used a 9.1-inch display to demonstrate the technology at the time. Samsung said back then that stretchable OLED displays could be used with wearables, IoT products, or even the automotive industry. While we can tell that the company has made significant progress with stretchable displays since then, Samsung is currently focusing on foldable displays. The South Korean manufacturer recently unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 with foldable displays. It’s easy to imagine future iterations of these phones featuring stretchable OLED displays. However, it could just be wishful thinking at this point. Samsung unveiled a handful of new display technologies at Display Week 2021 in May. One of the most notable announcements was a screen with an under-panel camera or UPC. When adopted, this could bring an end to the typical notch or waterdrop cameras we see on devices. While the UPC concept was shown on a laptop, we see no reason why it can’t be implemented on phones or tablets. We were also treated with a 17-inch foldable display tablet concept which is as extravagant as it sounds. Samsung dominates the display industry thanks to its innovations in the OLED segment. One of its biggest competitors, LG Display has announced a handful of exciting display technologies of its own over the past few years.
